In her youth, Rachel Carson loved nature and had a strong desire to write. In college she studied biology and composition. As a scientist, she was very concerned about the use of the strong chemicals in insecticides and pesticides. The chemicals were killing not only the unwanted, but also the beneficial insects, birds, and fish. She feared that the result would be a season in which there would be no bees to pollinate or birds to sing. She described this in a book titles Silent Spring. Because of this book laws were passed in the United States and other countries throughout the world restricting the use of DDT and many other pesticides.
